MIDINA - Expressive Linear MIDI Sequencer On Kickstarter
Post date:
New on Kickstarter is MIDINA, an open-source sequencer, which, according to its creator, was born from a passion for electronic music and technology. He also designed it to be both powerful and accessible.
Although there are plenty of other sequencers on the market, MIDINA hopes to stand out with features such as the ability to record pitch bends, aftertouch, and MIDI CCs. This means that it will be a pretty versatile and expressive sequencer compared to the competition. MIDINA will also offer robust step sequencer options that the creator claims will only improve with time. Since MIDINA is built on the Raspberry Pi platform, it is both accessible and affordable. In addition, due to its open-source nature, owners will be free to explore, modify, and expand its capabilities. This aligns with the core philosophies of MIDINA, which are community engagement, iterative software development, and community contributions to both software and hardware.
MIDINA will be available in Touch and Tactile versions, both of which feature a 5" AMOLED touch screen and eight push-switch rotary encoders. Both are also fully customizable thanks to things like MX switches that support hot swapping, custom keycaps, custom knobs, and more. In addition, the open source code means anyone can tinker with the application if they wish. The design is also long-lasting as industry-standard MX switches are rated to one hundred million presses, and the open frame of MEDINA allows for easy access if repairs are needed.
Pledges for MIDINA begin at $399 for the Touch version, which is fully built and delivered ready to play. However, this early bird offer is restricted to the first 303 backers who pledge for this tier. Those who delay can expect to pay $419 for the Touch version of MIDINA. Backers who want to customize the frame and knobs for their MEDINA Touch can pledge $499. Doing so gives them the option to choose from black, red, purple, blue anodized aluminum and their choice of any color knob set. A tactile version of MIDINA with 30 MX switches and NeoPixel embedded feedback is also available. These start at $549 for the Early Bird Offer tier and $619 for those who miss out on making the 303-unit cut-off. A customizable version of MIDINA Tactile is also available at the $649 tier for the Early Bird offer and $699 for the regular tier.
According to the creator of MIDINA, he plans on using the Kickstarter funds to bulk order parts for the first batch of units. This order will be based on the number of backers to keep waste low and also help keep the price low. According to the Kickstarter page, the first batch of units will be ready to ship by November 2024. MIDINA is an "all or nothing" project, which will only be funded if it reaches its goal of $8,
